SECURE Bolt Seal — ISO 17712:2013 High-Security Container Seal

ISO 17712:2013 hardened-steel container bolt seal

The SECURE Bolt Seal is the industry-standard, single-use, high-security mechanical seal for sealing ISO shipping containers, road trailers, rail wagons, and tankers. It carries the ISO 17712:2013 "H" classification — the international standard recognised by C-TPAT, AEO, PIP, and the WCO SAFE Framework — and is the workhorse of global container logistics, used on tens of millions of containers each year.

Construction and tamper evidence

The seal consists of two parts: a hardened-steel bolt with a precision-machined locking groove and a unique laser-etched serial number, and a locking sleeve (or "barrel") that, once pressed onto the bolt, cannot be removed without bolt cutters or an angle grinder. Removal visibly destroys the seal — providing unambiguous tamper evidence and a clear audit signal.

Technical specifications

  • Classification: ISO 17712:2013 "H" (high security) — tested for tensile, shear, bending, and impact strength.
  • Material: hardened steel body, 8 mm shaft, 22–28 mm head.
  • Pull strength: typically > 2,000 lbf (well above ISO "H" 800 lbf minimum).
  • Serial: laser-etched sequential, non-repeating across production runs; optional barcode.
  • Anti-defeat: anti-spin head; anti-drill locking core on premium variants.
  • Operating temperature: -40 °C to +85 °C.
  • Colour-coded jacket: shipper, route, or cargo-class identification.

Deployment best practice

  1. Confirm the bolt seal's serial against the dispatch documentation.
  2. Inspect the container door staples for prior tampering, drilling, or substitution.
  3. Insert the bolt through both door staples from the right-hand door (per WCO recommendation).
  4. Press the locking sleeve firmly until it audibly clicks and is flush against the staple.
  5. Tug-test the seal — it should not rotate or be withdrawn.
  6. Photograph the sealed door showing the serial number; record the serial in the e-way bill / customs documentation / TMS.
